MJ Daly Hosts Connecticut’s First Heavy Metal Summer Experience to Inspire Future Tradespeople

Hands-On Training Meets Career Readiness in MJ Daly’s Debut Heavy Metal Summer Experience.

Waterbury, CT — MJ Daly proudly hosted Connecticut’s first-ever Heavy Metal Summer Experience, a three-week hands-on camp designed to introduce high school students and recent graduates to the skilled trades. Though the inaugural group was small—with just four dedicated participants—the impact was powerful and personal.

From welding and working with copper and plastic piping to shaping sheet metal, students immersed themselves in the fundamentals of mechanical contracting. The camp is part of a national initiative to address the growing labor shortage in the trades by sparking interest among young people.

“We’re just trying to open their eyes to the opportunities available,” said Ed Carvalho, president of MJ Daly. “This camp is about showing students that there’s a path forward that doesn’t require college debt and offers real, rewarding work.”

MJ Daly partners with local apprenticeship unions across Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts, helping students transition from camp to career through earn-while-you-learn programs. These apprenticeships provide a direct route into the workforce, equipping students with skills and income from day one.

Eighteen-year-old James P., one of the camp’s participants, shared his enthusiasm: “I’ve always liked working with my hands. There’s something rewarding about doing it yourself. You can always learn to do it.”

The camp concluded with a graduation ceremony held on July 25, where MJ Daly extended heartfelt thanks to its sponsors—the Mechanical Contractors Association of Connecticut and DEWALT Tools—both of whom were in attendance to celebrate the students’ achievements and support the future of the trades.

The Heavy Metal Summer Experience is a national effort to revitalize the trades and attract the next generation of professionals. With the industry facing a significant labor shortage, initiatives like this camp are vital to building a sustainable future.

MJ Daly to Provide Fire Protection for National Coast Guard Museum

National Coast Guard Museum

MJ Daly was recently awarded the Fire Protection scope for the new National Coast Guard Museum in New London, Connecticut. They will work with general contractor A/Z Corporation on the 83,000-sf building, which includes 38,168-sf of exhibit space spread over five floors.

The fire protection work will include a wet sprinkler system in the building and a dry sprinkler system to protect the loading dock, storage rooms, exterior canopy, and atrium landing. This will utilize our VDC-BIM workflow to fabricate sprinkler piping in our in-house facility, providing clash-free installations and streamlined productivity.

Currently, the project is in the coordination phase and is expected to begin construction in October 2024, with a target completion date of Spring 2026. The U.S. Coast Guard is the only military branch without an official museum, so this is a welcome endeavor.

The National Coast Guard Museum Construction project is funded by a Federal Grant administered by the U.S. Coast Guard and private donations.

Together We Can Save Lives

Suicide Prevention in construction

Tragically, the construction industry has the second highest rate of suicide in the United States. September is Suicide Prevention Month (SPM) and last week was Construction Suicide Prevention Week (CSPW)— a week dedicated to raising awareness about the unique challenges workers face in construction, how it can lead to suicide, and what we can do to prevent it.

When it comes to preventing suicide, the idea of where to start can be overwhelming. CSPW volunteers have compiled a library of resources to help you get started— including videos, websites, toolbox talks and more. They can be found here. One of the key resource available to those in need is the suicide and crisis lifeline where counselors are available confidentially, 24/7/365. Call, text or chat 988.

Suicide Prevention in constructionLast week MJ Daly took steps to help facilitate the CSPW mission by providing Toolbox Talk documents to our team members. These are flyers that workers can take with them designed to help facilitate effective and efficient conversations around suicide prevention, mental wellness, substance use, and accessing services. Toolbox talks can be found here. We also distributed hard hat stickers, larger stickers and magnets with the lifeline number.

We hope you’ll take a moment to help spread the word on this critical issue.

MJ Daly’s Summer Interns

MJ Daly’s internship program is in full swing and we have six talented individuals onboard. We offer an apprentice level program that starts with a hands-on internship during the student’s Junior or Senior year. They then have the opportunity to take part in our co-op program which provides paid part-time employment during the semester, with the potential for a full-time position after graduation.

Many students aren’t aware of the wide range of opportunities that exist in our business that include high-value positions in mechanical engineering across HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire protection. This program provides opportunities for growth and ensures that our firm is properly staffed with skilled professionals for years to come.
