How has COVID impacted work in your trade and on project sites?

Covid has impacted the trade tremendously. There was a lack of work, and several people in the trade were laid off. As far as job sites, they’ve definitely been enforcing wearing your face mask and CDC hygiene.

Since we know the construction industry is primarily male-dominated, what top three aspects have affected you negatively and positively?

I honestly can’t provide any reasons because I don’t allow things to affect me. There’s already a stigma, and I understand that. I don’t go to work to “keep up” with the men because that’s scientifically impossible. But I do go to work, and I work hard and do the best I can. I’ve been fortunate enough to work with many great men who look past gender and judge you based on your work ethic.

What is the most interesting fact you have learned about the construction industry?

The number of new apprentices coming into the trades, especially women, is at an all-time low that cannot support the industry’s future.

What stands out the most for you working in this industry?

It is all about the men and women that work hard every day. They all have their own reasons to work safely, and I love learning about them.

What has been your biggest challenge or best experience working in your position within the construction industry?

When I first started, it took me some time to show our workers in the field that I have their best interests in mind and will work hard to see them leave the job happy and healthy every day. Now that I have been here for about 5 years, these relationships help facilitate my job, and I love it!

How has COVID impacted work in your trade and on project sites?

Covid has slowed the ability of contractors to get work. Therefore I have had two or three furloughs. Other than that, the only difference has been taking a break alone and wearing a mask.

Since we know the construction industry is primarily male-dominated, what top three aspects have affected you negatively and positively?

Honestly, being a woman has had no noticeable impact on my job. It is reasonable to assume the guys go easier on me regarding carrying or lifting extra heavy things. Still, generally, I am treated just like everyone else.

How has COVID impacted work in your trade and on project sites?

It has made work a bit stressful since masks are always mandatory. Being such an exerting line of work, masks make it that much more difficult.

Since we know the construction industry is primarily male-dominated, what top three aspects have affected you negatively and positively?

As a female, there are times guys assume, and I cannot do something. Other than that, I have had a good experience. The positive is that I have dedicated time to build up my strength by working out at the gym. I mostly work alone, so I know I’m trusted with each task.
