Let’s Reopen Schools Safely

COVID Relief Funds are now available to create safe learning environments.

Billions of dollars are allocated to prepare schools for reopening and improve air quality with
HVAC repair, replacement, and upgrading.

Reopen Schools Safely

The Coronavirus Response and Relief Supplemental Appropriations Act (CRRSA), signed late last year,
provides aid for elementary, secondary, and private schools through the ESSER II and GEER II Funds.

MJ Daly is ready to analyze your building’s environment and provide any necessary
HVAC work for optimum air quality and essential safety and efficiency.

Safe & Healthy Buildings + Energy Efficiency

Learn how to maintain energy efficiency during COVID-19 building restrictions.

Safe & Healthy Buildings + Energy Efficiency during COVID-19 building restrictions.

Key Guidelines

Ventilation
Demand control ventilation brings outdoor air into the building when occupied. Controls reduce ventilation when the building is unoccupied. This process is very efficient. The CDC, however, is recommending outdoor airflow nearly 100% of the time. Unfortunately, this will increase energy use.

HVAC Filters
It is being recommended that HVAC systems use filters with a minimum efficiency reporting value (MERV) of 13 or 14. These are effective at blocking virus carriers, however, they also add significant resistance to airflow, leading to higher energy usage.

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) Lighting
The CDC recommends implementing this type of lighting as it is effective in killing viruses. UVGI lighting, however, consumes a lot of energy.

Offset Guideline Inefficiency

Energy Management Systems
These smart-systems can dramatically improve the overall efficiency of a building by monitoring, reporting, and adjusting energy use across a range of systems. This investment will pay off now and in the long run.

Service & Maintenance
It’s important to change out MERV filters every two to three months to avoid high pressure caused by restricted airflow. Regular service of your HVAC system will help to ensure that your equipment is running at peak efficiency, avoid future costly repairs and even downtime.

Portable UVGI
UVGI lights may be a more efficient option in buildings with larger systems, like healthcare facilities.

Make Note of Changes
It’s very easy to make a temporary adjustment to your mechanical systems and then forget to change back when the time is right. Eventually, these restrictions will be lifted, at which point you’ll want to ensure everything is returned to its most efficient state.

Flavor & Aroma Project Completed

Bedoukian Research Inc. is a flavor and fragrance company offering over 450 aroma chemicals as well as providing custom manufacturing to pharmaceutical and specialty chemical industries. Bedoukian is continuously looking for innovative ways to improve chemical processes and enhance manufacturing efficiency.

Most recently, Bedoukian hired MJ Daly, an Arden Building Company, to create stainless steam piping for improved venting during processing. Detonation arrestors were attached to each of the outlets of the header which will allow flow but prevent flames from entering the header. If the temperature of the contents gets too high, the detonation arrestor will cut off the flow. The pipes coming from the header will contain vapor which will be used by Bedoukian to produce different fragrances.

Additionally, a 1000 gallon vertical tank was tied into existing piping from within the building. The purpose of this tank is to decrease the velocity of the gas entering the tank, which in turn will cause the gas to become a liquid. All stainless-steel piping was fabricated in-house and then transported to the Bedoukain building for installation.

Meet Mariah Chase, 4A Sprinkler Apprentice

What initiated your interest in the trades?
As a child, I loved working with my hands and creating things. I never thought plumbing would have been something I’d be doing for a living, but when I was presented with a job opportunity, I tried it and loved it. I’ve never looked back since then.

What has been your biggest challenge and best experience?
My biggest challenge would have to be proving myself. Being female in construction I feel like the odds are already stacked up against us and we’re viewed differently. So, proving the naysayers wrong is my best experience along with the skills and knowledge I’ve learned.

How has your experience been working for MJ Daly?
Great! I get the opportunity to work across the state of Connecticut with well-experienced Journey-people who are eager to teach their craft if you are willing to learn. MJ Daly’s wide range of offerings provides truly diverse work which I like.

Meet Rose Veilleux, Pipefitter, Apprentice

What initiated your interest in the trades?
I chose to go to Norwich Technical High School instead of my town’s public high school. In this type of school, you go through an exploratory experience and learn about all the trades offered. Out of the 12, I chose HVAC/R.

What has been your biggest challenge and best experience?
My biggest challenge has been learning a new trade as a first-year apprentice. I had switched from HVAC/R in high school to plumbing and heating as an apprentice. My best experience has been everyone’s willingness to teach me and help me succeed.

How has your experience been working for MJ Daly?
MJ Daly has given me the best apprentice opportunity possible. I have worked with a great group of people throughout my time here and have had a terrific experience.

Meet Christy Soto, 4A Sprinkler Apprentice

What initiated your interest in the trades?
I went to a technical high school and we were brought to work on different job sites. It was amazing to be hands-on, working, and learning all at once. I feel like that’s what really persuaded me to continue, and I’m happy that I did.

What has been your biggest challenge and best experience?
My biggest challenge was proving myself. Starting off, I knew it would be hard because I am a woman, but I knew I had to persevere. My best experience was when my foreman gave me instructions on what to do for a project and, with reassurance, provided me the opportunity to show him, myself, and others what I can do.

How has your experience been working for MJ Daly?
My experience working for MJ Daly has been awesome. I know I can count on them, just as much as they can count on me. They make me feel a part of their team.

Meet Ivette Ulloa, Journeyperson, Pipefitter

What initiated your interest in the trades?
I started doing HVAC work when I was in the Air Force. I really enjoyed it and investigated unions on the civilian side.

What has been your biggest challenge and best experience?
Working on a new high rise building my first year in construction was fascinating yet challenging. There are many pieces to the puzzle.

How has your experience been working for MJ Daly?
This will be my 5th year with MJ Daly, and I’m happy and proud to be part of the team.
