Design Efficiency & Clash Detection

Detailed BIM 3D renderings allow engineers to better understand the most efficient way to place fire safety system components such as sprinkler networks, fire alarms, and control panels. This process improves the overall safety effectiveness of the system, but also makes the construction process more cost-effective by identifying issues before time has been spent on construction. BIM can also help identify and address potential clashes so that fire safety system components do not conflict with other architectural, structural or mechanical systems.

Simulated Performance

BIM technology allows designers to simulate real world fire event scenarios. This provides the ability to assess the performance of fire safety system components and then make adjustments as needed. Doing so before construction begins allows for a much more cost effective solution and results is a more accurate and compliant solution.

MJ Daly is working on the Plumbing and HVAC scopes for a renovation project within a former office building. The project involves creating a new school that will accommodate 1,460 students and is projected to open in the fall of this year.

Piping is being installed for underground, roof, and first through fourth floors for potable/non-potable hot/cold water, domestic service, sanitary, and gas piping. HVAC work will be installed throughout the school, with the mechanical room on the first floor for boilers, water heaters, VFDs, and heat pumps.

Fike’s Fire Suppression Halts Thermal Runaway

Thermal runaway of a lithium battery is an uncontrollable rise in temperature and propagation of extreme fire hazards within an energy storage system (ESS). When the battery’s temperature reaches its threshold, the structural integrity of the cell breaks down, and energy is released. This results in a self-perpetuating cycle of extremely high temperatures and adjacent batteries going into thermal runaway. 

Severe fire events have occurred due to thermal runaway, and stopping it was previously impossible. However, Fike Corporation has unveiled a groundbreaking development – Fike Blue. This solution halts thermal runaway in lithium batteries of ESS and eliminates further cascading, possible re-ignition, and fire.
