Stand-Down for Opioid Abuse

MJ Daly’s State Office Building project was not just a job site this week, but the kick-off point for a week-long “Stand Down” – construction suspension to draw attention to the problem of Opioid Abuse in the construction industry.

Governor Ned Lamont, Attorney General William Tong, as well as Connecticut Construction Industry Association and Union officials all spoke at the event.

The campaign called “You Are Not Alone: There Is Help” will travel across multiple Connecticut construction sites this week to help spread awareness.

UCONN’s Student Recreation Center

UCONN’s new three-story 191,000 sqft facility includes 30,000 sqft of fitness space, a four-court gymnasium, two multipurpose activity courts, indoor running track, aquatics center, recreational pool, climbing center, racquetball courts, outdoor recreation center, functional training, and multipurpose rooms. MJ Daly’s scope for the project was a mechanical / HVAC construction that included multiple mechanical rooms with six AHU’s all varying in size. The smallest unit will support the multipurpose courts, and the largest has two-levels with a catwalk and ductwork up to the ceiling.

Hot water, chilled water, and glycol piping systems were run throughout the entire building and wrapped with color-coded insulation for easy identification. Stainless steel ductwork was installed with a special coating to prevent rust for all pool area piping.

Barack H. Obama Magnet University School

MJ Daly is in the final months of work on the new construction project of the 69,000 sqft Barack H. Obama Magnet University School. The school is located on the campus of Southern Connecticut State University and will accommodate 490 students from Pre-K to 4th grade.

The building design was an extensive collaboration to provide a dynamic project-based educational experience to include plenty of daylight, outdoor connections, and local landmark views. MJ Daly has been involved with all the mechanical construction, HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection systems.

Summer Interns

MJ Daly welcomes Intern Mitch Osterhout, a Safety & Occupational Health Applied Sciences major at Keene State College. We asked Mitch about his major, his future, and experience at MJ Daly…

I chose Safety & Occupational Health Applied Sciences as my major because accidents can happen in all types of work environments. As a Safety Manager, it can be rewarding to be able to prevent these accidents and injuries from happening. I plan to graduate next year and be able to get a job shortly after. My experience at MJ Daly this summer has been great, I have enjoyed meeting tons of awesome people.

MJ Daly welcomes back intern, Dan Shamas who will be heading into his sophomore year at UCONN as a biological sciences major on a pre-medical track. Dan has always been interested in science and intends to go to medical school and become a doctor. Dan joined MJ Daly as a junior in high school and has returned whenever possible. We asked Dan how his experience has been as an Intern at MJ Daly…

“Being a part of the MJ Daly family has been a real treat. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to make so many connections and meet such amazing people. Working here has taught me many skills, especially regarding communication, which has enabled me to feel more confident.

I have also had the opportunity to assist multiple staff members whose job responsibilities range from accounting, service, estimating, and project management allowing me to see the bigger picture of what occurs here daily at MJ Daly.

Moving forward, I will carry the priceless memories and skills my experiences at MJ Daly have provided.”
